Request to the Government for Restoration of Discontinued Book Post Service
India Post has abruptly discontinued its ‘Book Post’ service as of December 18, 2024, without prior consultation with stakeholders.
This decision has significantly impacted book publishers, distributors, and educational institutions, who relied on this cost-effective mode of shipping. Previously, under the Registered Book Post (RBP) service, customers could send up to 5 kg of books for just Rs 80, making it an affordable alternative to expensive courier services.
In response to this sudden discontinuation, CAPEXIL’s Chairperson, Shri Ramesh Kumar Mittal, met with Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister of Communications, Government of India, to urge the restoration of the Book Post service. During the meeting, he highlighted the service’s long-standing existence and its crucial role in supporting education, knowledge dissemination, and the publishing industry in India.
The publishing sector has expressed concerns over the financial strain this move places on book distribution, particularly affecting students, libraries, and small publishers. Industry stakeholders are calling on the government to reinstate the Book Post service to ensure affordable access to books across the country.
CAPEXIL will continue advocating for the revival of this essential service and urges all stakeholders to support this initiative for the benefit of India’s knowledge economy.
